Lathes - facing lathes(10)

The facing lathe is an ideal machine tool for the turning of large workpieces such as turbine discs. The facing lathe is therefore characterized by its very powerful and compact structure capable of supporting even very heavy workpieces. The workpiece is clamped to a large self-centering chuck so that all parts of the workpiece can be reached by the tools mounted on the turret. The workpiece allocated to the chuck is machined frontally by the tool placed in the turret. This type of machine is often equipped, like the parallel lathe, with a tailstock that helps to support particularly large workpieces. Newly built facing lathes can also be equipped with numerical controls, but it must be said that usually machines of this type have an important longevity where the mechanical component is far more important than the electronic component. They are also machines used exclusively for very specific machining operations. As a result, most of the facing lathes in the workshops all around the world are machines with quite many years of work behind them. It is much easier to find re-manufactured and re-modernised facing turning machines than newly built.
