Multi-spindle lathes are characterized by the presence of several horizontal spindles, usually from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 12, housed on the drive head. Each spindle can work at different speeds and thus allow several workpieces to be machined simultaneously. Multi-spindle lathes are special lathes suitable for series machining of small parts, such as products from industrial sectors such as the medical and watchmaking industries. Multi-spindle lathes are essentially divided into two main categories: cam-type multispindle lathes, which have been on the market for a very long time, and modern cnc-type multispindle lathes. Multi-spindle cam-type automatic lathes have the advantage of being very high production machines, but at the same time have the great disadvantage of being very difficult to configure. These lathes require a great deal of time for the set up of the machining operations and consequently also a high level of technical skill on the part of the operator. Today, the use of multispindle cam-type lathes is almost exclusively bound to mass production with very large numbers, where the machine is not required to be particularly flexible. On the contrary, the use of multispindle cnc lathes is increasingly appreciated and therefore widespread, where the electronics have replaced the cams, guaranteeing high flexibility and very short set-up times; therefore, from the 2000s onwards, the multispindle lathe has seen a new renaissance thanks to the introduction of cnc and the adaptation of its use also in the machining of different products with small production batches.
