Lathes - Swiss type lathes - sliding headstock lathes(50)

Sliding headstock lathes or swiss type lathes are ideal machines for series machining of workpieces smaller than 32 mm in diameter and are therefore ideal machines for machining small mechanical parts. They are widely used in the medical and watchmaking sectors. Sliding headstock lathes are machines equipped with different axes that allow the simultaneous machining of the two faces of the piece and the use of live turning tools and drilling tools. Sliding headstock lathes are characterised by very high stability and precision. These characteristics are dictated by the fact that the material to be machined flows through a guide bush and the rotation motion is generated by a second spindle that in addition to rotating the piece pushes it through the bush. This movement of the material (usually a metal bar) by means of the spindle that generates the movement and the passage through the guide bush distinguishes the Z axis of the machine (sliding headstock). The tools always remain close to the guide bush, ensuring maximum stability. For series machining of small mechanical parts using sliding headstock lathes, it is important to pay attention to the type of coolant used in order to guarantee maximum results in terms of chipability, flow of the enormous quantity of chips produced and, last but not least, to guarantee maximum durability of the cutting tool. Normally, maximum efficiency is achieved by using entire oil that is much preferred to the cutting emulsifier.
