Lathes - Vertical turret lathes - Vertical Ram-type(56)

Vertical lathes are machines necessary for machining large, heavy workpieces, such as railway wheels. The unique configuration of the vertical lathe involves the housing of the spindle platform, also called plateau, at the base of the work area so as to allow the clamping and machining of large workpieces. The tool is located in the upper part, which is mirrored to the platform. The tool is housed in a device called "ram" that allows the movement of the tool along the workpiece. The ram also moves along the vertical axis to allow workpieces with different heights to be machined. In the most advanced vertical lathes there is also the automatic tool changer with the possibility to have also milling tools as well as turning tools. The vertical lathes, depending on the type of machining for which they are intended, can be equipped with or without numerical control.
