Horizontal machining centers are suitable for mass production of both small and medium-large workpieces. The main feature is the horizontal position of the spindle combined with the presence of a minimum of two tables/pallets to allow the machine to work without downtime. Horizontal machining centers are always equipped with 4 axes represented by the rotary motion of the table/pallet to allow the tool to reach and process the 4 lateral faces of the workpiece. Depending on whether the rotation of the table is controlled continuously or indexed by degrees, there will be a greater or lesser efficiency in positioning the workpiece with respect to the spindle. In the presence of large batch production requirements, instead of the two pallets commonly present in horizontal machining centres, we will find a multi-pallet carousel. More pallets are placed on the carousel, usually at least 6, to allow the machine to have greater production autonomy. Once the processing of the workpiece is completed, the automatic pallet change allows the pallet on which the finished piece is clamped to be moved outwards to make space for the incoming pallet with the workpiece ready to be processed. The finished parts will then be removed from the pallets and replaced with new parts to be machined. The replacement of the finished piece with the piece to be machined takes place in masked time, i.e. without the machine interrupting its working cycle, thus allowing a significant saving of time.
