Plastic blowmolding is an industrial production technique aimed at obtaining hollow plastic objects, such as water bottles, petrol cans and watering cans. The blowing process begins with the melting of the plastic, which is placed in a mould after passing through a tube. Compressed air is blown inside the mould, forcing the molten plastic to adapt to the walls of the mould and to take on the same shape. Once cooled, the plastic is ejected from the mould to obtain the finished piece with the desired shape. Industrially, there are three different types of blow moulding, corresponding to three different types of blow moulding machines. The three types of blow moulding are: "injection blow moulding", "extrusion blow moulding" and "injection blow and stretching". Injection blowing is the most widely used technique for the production of small medical bottles. In this process the plastic is moulded on a central pin, the pin is rotated in a station where hot blowing will take place and then be inflated and cooled. In extrusion blowing, the plastic is extruded, i.e. pushed, into an empty tube. The melting of the material takes place thanks to the friction of the material against the walls of the extruder. The extruded material is then directed into a metal mould. Air is then blown and the plastic is inflated to the desired shape. The last process involves injection and stretch blowing. This process is suitable for the production of large volumes of round shaped bottles. This process can be carried out either in one step or in two steps. The single-stage process is also divided into three stages and requires the use of 4 different machines. In the case, instead, of the double phase process, the plastic is first moulded into a preform using the injection moulding process and then blown once it has cooled down.
