Laser cutting is a widely spread and much appreciated cutting technique for sheet-metal cutting, marking and engraving. The most important element of these systems is obviously the laser. All types of lasers are essentially made up of three elements: 1) an external source of energy, usually a pump that conveys the energy from an external source to the laser medium in the form of radiation; 2) the active laser that, depending on the case, can be a mixture of gas (CO2 laser), a crystal body (YAG laser) or glass fibres (fiber laser); 3) the resonator, consisting of two mirrors that performs two main tasks, directing the laser beam and at the same time amplifying it. This particular technology is very appreciated because it has some advantages that make it very useful for a wide range of processes. The main advantages of laser cutting are to be found in the intensity and directionality of the laser beam. The intensity of the laser is consistent, which means that the laser beam always comes into contact with the material to be processed with the same intensity, resulting in a clean cut and without burrs. Directionality, on the other hand, thanks to the use of special lenses, allows complex and precise cutting geometries to be carried out that are difficult to obtain with other cutting methods. For these reasons, the modern metalworking industry appreciates laser cutting systems so much that they are often preferred to any other existing technology.
